What is "Open Source Software"

In the simplest terms possible, "Open Source Software" means that anyone can look at the underlying computer code that makes a peice of open source software work and change that code if they have the ability and desire to make those changes and anyone has the ability to distribute the software for free.

From an economic perspective, one of the most important aspects of Open Source Software for libraries is that there is no cost for downloading or using open source software.  There are, however, many companies that can help libraries and other businesses install and manage open source systems.
